Booking student accommodation in France from abroad can feel like making a decision without seeing the place in person. In Bordeaux, Docks is served by tram B, East by tram A, and Bègles offers easy access to Saint-Jean station and the city centre. Prepare an application that meets Canvas requirements

Once you have chosen your residence, your application becomes the key step. To assess it remotely, Canvas needs to verify your identity, your current status and your rental guarantee. The Canvas account must always be created in the name of the person who will live in the apartment, even if a parent will be paying the rent.

As the tenant, you will need a valid passport or national identity card, followed by a document matching your situation: a certificate of enrolment or admission letter if you are a student, an internship agreement if you are an intern, or an employment contract if you are working. Proof of address is also required. If you previously rented a property, provide your last three rent receipts; if you were staying with someone else, provide a signed statement from the person who hosted you.

Your guarantor must be tax resident in France and have income equal to at least twice the rent before any promotional discount is applied. Their application must include a valid identity document, contact details, their latest tax notice and proof of income relevant to their circumstances. If your guarantor is not tax resident in France, a commercial guarantee provider such as GarantMe is required.

Before submitting anything, open every file to make sure it is complete and easy to read. Use exactly the same spelling as on your passport throughout the application. A cropped or expired document, or one issued under a different name, can be enough to delay the review.

From application to confirmed booking

Once your documents are ready, the rest of the process takes place online. Choose an apartment available on the right date, complete the application and upload the tenant’s and guarantor’s documents. If the application is complete, the Canvas team generally reviews it within one to three working days. You then receive the tenancy agreement to sign electronically, together with the instructions for completing the booking.

The security deposit and first month’s rent must be paid within the deadline stated in the email, usually within 72 hours. Proof of home insurance is also required before you move in. Once everything has been received, Canvas countersigns the agreement and sends the final confirmation. This is the message that confirms the apartment has been reserved in your name.
