But, let’s not kid ourselves: on this new journey, two small but inevitable challenges usually crop up. The first is that you’re going to miss home and your family traditions from time to time. The second is much more pragmatic: making sure to get to the eight o’clock class on time.

At Canvas Student, our aim is much more than simply providing student accommodation; we want to create a real home away from home. That’s why, at this time of year when thousands of young people are getting their university offers and planning the upcoming academic year, we wanted to launch a very special initiative to tackle both these challenges with a healthy dose of humour, empathy and emotion.

This unique and interactive invention created by Canvas Student allows students to plan their mornings by incorporating personalised messages from their parents, siblings and even their pets!

Stop endlessly snoozing your alarm for another five minutes. From now on, your mornings at the hall of residence might start with your mum affectionately (or maybe a little insistently) reminding you that you mustn’t miss class, or with your dad cheering you on for that all-important exam. It also has a unique LED screen so you can look at photos from your childhood and reminisce about fun times whilst you get ready for class.

Although Fam O’Clock is presented with a fresh, fun and humorous visual style, the underlying message at the heart of this campaign is deeply real and necessary. Leaving the family nest is a huge step for both students and parents. It’s a time of great change, when physical distance can be unsettling, but when the emotional bond need not be lost.

At our Canvas Student halls of residence, we actively support that transition. We want our residents to gain independence and to grow both professionally and personally, always remembering that their roots and their family are their greatest support system. Fam O’Clock is our way of reminding you that, even if you’re far away, your families are always there to give you the boost you need to start each day full of energy.

Mind you, as the heart-warming ending to our video reminds us: the alarm clock is a lovely way to feel the warmth of home, but don’t forget to actually call your parents! They’re keen to hear how you’re getting on in your new room, what the communal areas are like, and how your university experience is going.
